Bringing you A Whole Lotta Love and Peace in 2011

As you may know if you've been reading this blog for a while, I started two blogs called the Love Train and the Peace Train this fall. Well, recently I also expanded this onto a Tumblr site, which I find is even easier, especially for other people to submit their posts (which you can do even if you are not a Tumblr user). So, you can now get a Whole Lotta Love and Peace on the Love Train and the Peace Train on Tumblr as well.

As we enter 2011, my hope is that it will be a year for you focused on love and peace. When we have love and peace in our hearts, we are happy ourselves and it also brings happiness to others. I hope that you enjoy these sites, will submit posts, and share them with your friends. I don't make money from these blogs and I'm not concerned about simply having a lot of followers; I am doing this because my desire is that there be more love and peace in the world. Perhaps you may think this is a naive goal, but I know that by simply reading the posts that others have written and by focusing my own heart on love and peace I have already gained a great deal of both for myself as well.

Wishing You A Whole Lotta Love and Peace,

Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men

“Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men”.  You hear it so often at this time of year. As you may know, this phrase comes from the nativity story found in Luke 2: 13 and 14, which says “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests’.” I guess there is some contention regarding whether the phrase should be translated ‘good will toward men’ or ‘peace to men of good will’, but that is not anything I want to dwell on. The point is that the angels were telling the shepherds to celebrate: Love and peace has come to dwell among you and you can experience this love and peace for yourselves!

I think one of the most wonderful things about Christmas is that people focus on giving, on putting aside differences, and on celebrating family and friends and the things that make life special. All in all, I think people have more ‘good will toward men’ and it makes life more enjoyable both for the giver and the recipient. The Christmas spirit is really all about love, as this is what Christ came to teach us. My question is though, how can we can carry this spirit of Christmas with us throughout the year? Why do we only allow ourselves a ‘holiday’ of peace and harmony?

1 John 4 says 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

The true meaning of Christmas is love. When we put aside differences and love our fellow man, we have peace in this world. If the world could truly understand love then there would be peace on earth.  Sometimes peace seems like this hippy pie-in-the sky concept that will never really happen, but I think this is because we want world peace to happen on a grand scale, which is a complicated thing. But we as individuals can achieve peace at any point by simply loving one another and loving ourselves as well. As Confucius said "To put the world in order, we must put the nation in order. To put the nation in order, we must put the family in order. To put the family in order, we must nurture our personal life. To cultivate our personal life, we must first set our hearts and minds right… Plant a thought, reap an act. Plant an act, reap a habit. Plant a habit, reap a character. Plant a character, reap a destiny."

Christmas is becoming more and more commercialized and I think if we are not careful we can lose that spirit of love and peace at Christmas if we let this take over. Our family does not make a huge deal out of gift exchange, which I like because if I do go to the mall at this time of year it can be a somewhat of an un-peaceful thing. People cut you off trying to find a parking space as they circle the mall for the 8th time, and it seems many people have this feeling of panic on their faces, trying to find the perfect gift or get their shopping done. This is not what Christmas is meant to be about. It is not about being the perfect hostess and feeling like you have to be Martha Stewart in order to earn love from your family. It is not about making sure you send cards to every single one of your friends so that all you have time for is to sign it and it has no meaning. It is not about whether or not your Christmas decorations are better than your neighbors or if your lights are visible from space. It is not about spoiling your kids with things they don’t need and won’t appreciate. It is not about any of those things. All of these things are fine in moderation, but I hope that they don’t become the focus of our attentions.

Anyway, as Christmas day approaches, I wish all of you love, peace, and joy both on the 25th and on every day and may we all remember the 'reason for the season'.

The Love Train Takes Off...

In my last post I announced the start of a new blog, A Love Train. I've been encouraged by all your feedback and the fact that two people have already written posts!

Yesterday was Tanya from a Taste of T, with her hilarious commentary on the things she loves... especially on boots!

Today, in order to keep up the momentum, I thought I'd post here what Iris Jaye wrote. She is only seventeen, but wrote an amazing post on love that I wanted to make sure you all saw.

Six Things I Know About Love

Iris Jaye from Metaphors joined A Love Train. Here is what she wrote:

I'm not the expert on love. But for my age, I believe I've seen and felt plenty. I don't want to write about myself and my stories. Instead, I've decided to write six things I know about love.

~

1. Love is everything. We live because of love; because we love, and because we want to be loved. It can be your family, your friends, your special one, your hobby, your work, that book you're reading, that chocolate you're eating.

We live simply because there is something we love which makes us happy. And while there is still something to love, there is still something to live for.

2. Love doesn't hurt. Most people think it does, what with all the heart-break and rejection we witness. But it isn't love that hurts, it's the absence of it. When someone lies or cheats, or when chooses someone else over you, it hurts not because there's love in your heart, but because there's less love in theirs.

Love isn't what breaks our hearts; the truth is, it's what heals our hearts.

Think chocolate.

3. Love isn't just romance. Romance is romance. Love is a phenomenon. Romance is what you do and how you feel; love becomes the very life that you live. It's not just the person you're going to marry someday, the person on your mind all the time, or the person you spent all night crying over.

Love is also the family and friends who are there on your wedding day, the ones who always listen when you're talking all about your crush, the ones who bring the ice cream and hugs over when you need it most.

4. Love changes everything. It changes the things you do, because you want your loved ones to be a part of it. Read a book everyday. Can't start the day without coffee. Texting goodnight before you sleep. It changes the person you are, because the people and things you love become a part of you.

Learning to love someone or something usually turns them into a priority: the most important thing in our lives.

5. Love is beautiful. It always is. If you don't find it beautiful, it's because you're not in the presence of that same love. Some love art, others don't give a second glance. Some couples share everything, others think that's suffocating. But if it's love, it's always beautiful.

It's always worth writing songs and stories about, painting pictures about, thinking about and talking about. Love is worth saving, because love is what saves the world every day.

6. Love is real. When they say that love is a fairy tale, we automatically think it's imaginary, unreal or non-existent. I believe that love being a fairy tale actually means that it happens, just not in the way we expect it to. It's not the things that we hear as children or see in the movies, because those things end. But real-life fairy tales, and real-life love, last.

And if you're even reading these words, I know you believe me.

To be included on A Love Train, just write a post and leave your url on either the comments of this blog or on A Love Train. You are not limited to only writing once, so don't feel like you have to write everything you love in one amazing blog. It could just be one or two things. This is a great way for you as a blogger to connect with other blogs and I'm sure it doesn't hurt your google rankings either to have more blogs link to yours :) Just a thought. Hope you'll join in!

Oh, and the winner of the signed first edition giveaway was Christine Taylor. Congratulations!

A Love Train

Today I am announcing the start of a new blog called A Love Train. The thought popped into my head one day when I heard the song, A Love Train by the O'Jays.

I'm sure you've heard it. 'People all over the world, join hands. Start a love train.'
The way it works is easy. Just write a blog about love... what it means to you, how to share love in your everyday life, one thing you want to do to bring more love to the world, something inspirational that you see someone or some other group doing, a list of ten things that you love, etc. Let me know you've written it by leaving a comment with your url and I will copy the full post with a link to your blog as well. Its kind of like a permanent linky party. Its fun and it can also increase your own blog exposure.

So here is the very first blog post and I've chosen to write a list of ten things that I love:

I LOVE POMEGRANATES. Even though I'm grown, my mom and dad are always surprising me with pomegranates at this time of year. They almost always have one for me when I go to their house. Pomegranates are the perfect snack. Instead of munching on something unhealthy when I have a snack attack, I love to go for a pomegranate because it takes so long to eat. When I was younger I actually used to be quite overweight. Then I found with just some exercise and switching some healthy foods for some unhealthy ones, the weight just dropped. And they make pretty decorations for the holiday season too :)

I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY. I'm just an amateur, but anyone who has seen my blog, knows that I love photos and highlighting photography and photographers I like for my Favorite Foto Friday post. I just got a DSLR a year ago and I can't believe how much I'm in love.

I LOVE THE BEACH. One of my names means 'woman of the sea' and its a perfect name for me. Unfortunately I don't live near the beach now, but I have at many points in my life, in Costa Rica, Florida, California, and Massachusetts. There's nothing like the feel of sand in my toes...

I LOVE PEOPLE. Of course I love my friends and family, but I also just love people in general. Sometimes I have this overwhelming love for people I have never met... and I'm not talking hollywood celebs here. I'm talking about the old woman on the train, the grocery store attendant bagging my groceries, etc.  There are so many wonderful people in this world, all with their gifts and peculiarities - and I think that is what makes this world such a lovely place.

I LOVE PAINTING. It doesn't matter what I'm painting. It can be on canvas (I like doing big abstract pieces) or it can be painting bookshelves, like I was doing today. There is something soothing about having a paintbrush in my hand. I guess I just get into the 'flow'. I actually painted the heart below when I was painting a closet earlier this year.

I LOVE BOOKS/ READING. I could seriously read all day if left to my own devices. Ok. Thats not totally true because I have too many other 'loves', but on certain cold winter days its definitely not uncommon to find me reading for a period of 12 hours at a time. I think my husband must think I've disappeared into the book (and in many ways I have). Anyway, it doesn't hurt that I'm a rare book dealer (although I can't really read those wonderful old first editions), as its a nice environment to spend my days. (By the way, there's still time to enter your name for the giveaway of a signed first edition, which I'll extend until November 9th).

I LOVE CEREAL. I know its weird, but I could seriously eat cereal at any time of the day. (Actually I just had some for dinner). I probably shouldn't be admitting that, but whatever. Love me or leave me. I remember my sister once did one of those 'about me' lists on facebook and she, too, mentioned her love of cereal. I hadn't realized that she was still such a cereal-fiend until then. We must have eaten a lot of cereal growing up.

I LOVE PLANTS. When I'm surrounded by those lovely green beauties with their occasional blessings of floral delights, I feel connected. I feel healthy. I feel alive. My home has plants everywhere... sometimes more than I can handle, but I love it. I used to work at a greenhouse at a science museum and I also used to be an outdoor education teacher, romping around the redwood forests. Although I love my work now, those were definitely some lovely-filled days.

I LOVE SCIENCE. I know its a bit geeky, but I got my first microscope when I was like 9. I remember the first time I saw all the things that were underneath that very un-powerful scope. It changed my life. I love all kinds of science. I got a degree in biology and then a masters focused on microbial disease. I've been a biology teacher and a chemistry teacher. (I think I've had too many varying careers... I just have too many loves, aka the name of my blog :) ). Now I'm into physics. Science is so amazing because it informs us about the world around us... and there is just so much to discover!

I LOVE BLOGGING. I never understood the whole thing about blogs and blogging until I started writing one myself less than a year ago. And then I started reading blogs. And then I started 'meeting' so many wonderful people in the blogging world. It has been such a lovely adventure. Since I live in a small town (pop. 12,000) and work from a home (a somewhat solitary endeavor), blogging has allowed me to meet people from all over the world that I wouldn't normally have the chance to ever know in my entire life. There are so many lovely people and blogs out there, and I hope that as this Love Train takes off, it will be a place for more people to meet, share their loves, and link up their blogs together. I hope you'll join me!

Adrienne

Put love into the world.

Put love into the world and heaven with all its beatitudes and glories becomes a reality.

Practice Kindness

This is what should be done
By one who is skilled in goodness,
And who knows the path of peace:
Let them be able and upright,
Straightforward and gentle in speech.
Humble and not conceited,
Contented and easily satisfied.
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways.
Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful,
Not proud and demanding in nature.
Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.
Wishing: In gladness and in saftey,
May all beings be at ease.
Whatever living beings there may be;
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
Those born and to-be-born,
May all beings be at ease!

Let none deceive another,
Or despise any being in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.
Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings:
Radiating kindness over the entire world
Spreading upwards to the skies,
And downwards to the depths;
Outwards and unbounded,
Freed from hatred and ill-will.
Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down
Free from drowsiness,
One should sustain this recollection.
This is said to be the sublime abiding.
By not holding to fixed views,
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision,
Being freed from all sense desires,
Is not born again into this world.

Peace Through Music

Have you heard of Playing for Change? It's a project that was started in 2004 with the goal to "inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music". The creators of the project traveled around the world to places such as New Orleans, Barcelona, South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland. Using a mobile recording equipment, they recorded local musicians performing the same song, interpreted into their own style. A CD was released last year, as well as a documentary entitled Peace Through Music. I haven't seen the documentary yet, but I just stumbled upon these videos on YouTube and I love them. I hope you do too!

Also, if you want to find out more about them, it appears that "playingforchange.com" can harm your computer. Their real address is www.playingforpeace.org

Pass it on...

I just discovered an idea called "Karma Cards" over at Yes and Yes via Operation Nice. The idea is to put these cards somewhere random such as in a book, left at a restaurant table, or maybe just even on the ground or park bench somewhere. Just imagine if you were having a bad day or maybe just a humdrum day or even a great day and you found one of these cards? I know it would make me stop and think and maybe change what I was doing or just bring some extra brightness to my day. Anyway, I love them and I'm looking forward to taking part in passing on love in this fun little way.

Blog Love

Much love to Vic over at the Bloggers Club for featuring my blog the other day. I just saw it this morning. Even though I've only recently started blogging, I really enjoy it! I began blogging this year as a way to organize all the stuff that I love - links, music, photos, and other things I find on the web. I had no idea that I would 'meet' so many wonderful other bloggers and get so much inspiration from their blogs as well. Thank you to everyone who has started following and for all your lovely comments and encouragement!

Dashboard

We had a memorial service for my grandfather this weekend, who had passed away in November. He lived in Florida, so they had a service there at the time, but he is actually being buried up here with my grandmother in the town that they spent most of their lives and raised their seven children. My grandfather was a very devoted and outspoken Christian. This sometimes put people off, but overall he left quite an amazing legacy behind him.

As we went to the grave site and looked at the dash between the dates, I was reminded again of the poem The Dash by Linda Ellis, and it got me thinking about the 'Dashboard' of our lives. First, here's the poem if you don't know it (or its always good to read again):

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning...to the end.

He noted that first came her date of birth
and spoke the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the “dash” between those years. (1934 -1998)

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth...
and now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own;
the cars...the house...the cash,
what matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our “dash”.

So think about this long and hard...
are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real,
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile...
remembering that this special “dash”
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy's being read
with your life's actions to rehash...
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent your “dash”?

This poem really puts things in perspective for me. I think I'm a fairly reflective person and I try to live life to its fullest (most of the time), but often I can tend to get on autopilot and all of a sudden a week or month has gone by and I have to say to myself, where did the time go? What did I really do with the time that was given to me? If I had a dashboard for my life, what would it say about how I was using my dash? How would I measure up?

In this high tech world that we live in, we have so many gizmo's and gadgets, and it seems that we attempt to measure everything. We're a culture obsessed with analytics and metrics. From the time we're born, we're measured and weighed to see how we 'size' up. We go to school and we're tested and tested until we become geniuses at taking tests (even if we have no way of knowing how to apply that knowledge). We have IQ tests, social IQ tests, personality tests, career aptitude tests... We like to measure everything.

We have dashboards for our cars

Dashboards for our computers

Dashboards for our blogs

But what about measuring the really important things of our lives? Can we measure the amount of love, respect, or appreciation in our lives? Can we put these things on a dashboard? If I could, what would it say about the direction I'm going in? Am I going too fast or do I need to 'slow down enough to consider what's true and real'? What's the temperature of my passion? Have I let it cool too much? Perhaps I can't put these things on a literal dashboard, but I do want to truly try to take an assessment of my life before my 'eulogy's being read'.

I actually just looked up a few personal life tests and discovered that there are many out there such as the 'clean sweep' assessment or authentic happiness questionnaires. Perhaps I'll try a few of these just for the fun of it, and I'm sure I'll learn some interesting things about myself or they will help me to work on some things I want to change. Really though, when it comes down to it, when that time comes for me to leave this world, it won't matter if I did or didn't back up my hard drive monthly (one of the weird questions on the clean sweep assessment). There's really only one thing that I hope that people will say about my little dash of a life: 'it was filled with a whole lotta love'. :)

Shh... I have a secret.

Shh.... Listen. Do you hear it? The earth is breaking forth from its slumber. She has a secret to share. Tasha Tudor knew the secret. Do you?

Follow me...

through the arbor...

Behind dark, twining ivy, On an old, Victorian wall,

              source

Where moths and small flies flutter, And spiders weave and crawl,

There's a rusty lock that's hidden, In a peeling, old oak door –

                                                  source

They who find the key are bidden, To unlock a treasure store,

               source

For behind those creaky hinges, Lies a garden of delights,

Only known to special people who appreciate such sights.

...Seek the door, unlock its treasures, for it's there for everyone

In that special, secret garden, Where the love goes on and on.

A Secret Garden

If there were a secret garden,
What would it comprise?
Fragrant flowers, a babbling brook, butterflies?
Dragonflies, birds, and bees, there would be all of these.

But most of all, within ‘that place’,
Tranquil peace and serenity await;
Ever there for me and you to relax and renew.
So every morning before you start,
Visit the ‘secret garden’ of your heart.
