A little sunshine in the form of a flower...

Anyone who knows me also knows that sunflowers are my favorite flowers in the world. Here are some that my parents planted this year that I just loved and had to share a few photos I had taken before they passed away.

Hope they bring a little sunshine to your day!

The Queen of the Night

Last week I was invited over to a little celebration of the blooming of a flower. Yes.. that's right. It's a special occasion, as this flower only blooms a few times each year and only at night. It is the Nightblooming Cereus, also called the Queen of the Night. It is also known as the Lunar Flower or Moon Flower. I don't know if it usually times its opening to around the full moon... but it was quite full that night and we could also hear a large pack of coyotes howling in the distance - something I've never heard before. The whole thing was quite a magical experience.

The flower has a beautiful scent and I think you will agree that the flower is quite stunning. Even though it just lasts for a night I think this can serve to remind us that everything fades away so quickly. Our lives are like a blink in the cosmic scheme of things... but that doesn't make them any less beautiful or important. We need to appreciate the beauty that is in front of us at every moment and bloom our brightest in the brief span of life that is given to us.

Favorite Foto Friday - Fabulous Flowers

I love stumbling across awesome photos and photographers on sites like Flickr. I love these flower photos taken by Nodie 26. This first one in particular grabbed my attention and I thought I'd share these.

Flower Preservation Tips

I'm part of our local garden club, which my grandmother was also an avid member of. Even though she has passed away, its fun to get to know some of the ladies that she once played with.

Last week we did some flower arranging and a local flower shop owner came to give us some tips. I love arranging flowers, but I never realized how many things I was doing wrong with regard to their care and preservation. So often I would focus on the arranging of the flowers, which is the creative part... but if you want your flowers to last a week or more, follow these simple tips:

* Put the flowers in water as soon as they are cut

*Always use a clean vase

*Always strip all the leaves off the stems (don't let any of the leaves touch the water; otherwise the water will flow into the leaves and not into the flower head)

*Cut stems at an angle; if they are woody stems, cut them in a V shape

*Always use a clean knife or shears. Any diseases from one plant can be transferred to other plants.

Here is a photo of my arrangement. It lasted over a week :)

Here are some of the other ladies arrangements and some that were done as examples.

Happy Flower Arranging!

Peonies and Poppies

Memorial day weekend means a buzz of activity here in Vermont. Even though summer doesn't officially start for another month, this weekend really marks the beginning of summer for us. Everyone was out this morning at the farmer's markets, going to yard sales, and having backyard picnics. We're heading out to dinner with some friends in a minute as well, but I thought I'd take a moment to post some lovely pictures of some flowers out in my garden right now.. peonies and poppies. Aren't they gorgeous?

The News of Flowers

Ko Un's reading tonight was amazing. He is so incredible. I thought I'd share a few more of his poems, relating to flowers and a few pictures of some lovely spring photos I took yesterday around the house and today at Smith.

Pumpkin Flower

For thirty-three years as a poet
I merrily defined what beauty was.
Each time, without hesitation
I would declare: beauty is like this, or:
this is a betrayal of beauty.
I went crazy over several different kinds
of aesthetic theory.
But beauty was never
in those aesthetic theories.
I was falling asleep
with the light on.
What fear in the days gone by!
From now on I will strictly refrain
from any definitions of beauty!
Define away!
Define away!
As if beauty can ever be defined!
All through the weeks of summer rain
no flowers bloomed on the pumpkin creepers.
Now the rains are over
and at long long last a flower has bloomed,
inside it a bee is quivering,
outside it I am quivering.
Pumpkin flower brimming full of life:
you are true beauty!

The News of Flowers

Spring. Everything’s liberated.
The news of flowers
eases the poverty of this world.
Throughout this fractured country
(some say it’s a pity,
others not so)
spring has come full force.
An azalea blooming at Cheju Island
in the very south,
after a few days
begins blossoming
across the sea
in Southern Cheolla
& Southern Kyeongsang.
A few days later
& it reaches the shore of the Han, mid-country,
& all along the Soyang River.
About a month later
around Hyesan
on the upper reaches of the Yalu, North Korea: blossoms.
At the end of May
about 2700 meters up
by a cold spring at the treeline
azaleas bloom in many colors.
This is enough.
One cannot wish for more.
Where could things be better than among the flowers of a spring day?
So with South & North: gradually, evenly.

Forcing Forsythia

We had an incredible warm spell last week, and the forsythia is starting to finally come out. I love forsythia... its such a breath of fresh air after the long Vermont winters. Ever since early March however, I've been able to have forsythia inside the house by forcing it. My grandmother always used to do this for center-pieces for the annual sugar on snow suppers. I guess I'm following in her footsteps (especially as I'm in the garden club she was once a very active member of). Anyway, here are some lovely photos of forsythia that I've had around the house over the past month or so.
